YARRA GLEN (town)
At a public meeting on 27 April 1888 it was agreed that the new railway station would be named Yarra Glen rather than Yarra Flats. The name was derived from the property downstream at Yering which had been selected by the McPherson family in 1852. Businesses and services were quickly being established in Bell Street immediately north of the new railway station, some of which had moved from the original village adjacent to the Yarra Flats Hotel.
Yarra Glen is located 40 km north-east of Melbourne on the Melba Highway and lies on the northwest boundary of the Shire of Yarra Ranges. At the 2006 census the population was 2598.
