MOUNT WISE ROAD, Yarra Glen
The earliest use of this road may have been in the 1850s when farmers at Yarra Flats took produce to the Caledonian gold diggings. It came into greater use in the 1860s when the route to the Woods Point gold fields was opened up. Horse-drawn vehicles from Melbourne, including Cobb & Co coaches, were unable to descend into the Yarra Valley via Breakneck, so a new route was found through Christmas Hills along Watsons Creek, the present Osborne Road and descended the escarpment via Mount Wise.
