AYRES, Stanley Richard (1895-1918))

Stan was the born at Yarra Glen on 19 July 1895, the ninth child of Robert and Elizabeth Ayres (nee Clark). He attended the Dixons Creek and the Tarrawarra State Schools.  Stan was a labourer working at Drouin West when he enlisted on 14 July 1915, a week before his 20th birthday. He left Australia on 6 January 1916 and initially went to the Middle East with the 8th Battalion and then to France. In May 1917 he married Agnes Bell in Glasgow. Stan received a shell wound to the head during action in France on 9 August 1918 and died the following day. He is buried at Vignacourt British Cemetery. His wife Agnes joined his parents in Gippsland in July 1920. Correspondence on his AIF records states that she was still in Gippsland but re-married by 1923.  She is on the electoral roll for Gippsland in 1924 under her new name Agnes Mullett.
