HUBBARD, William (1837-1897)

William married Elizabeth Ketteringham in Norfolk, England in 1858 and they arrived in Melbourne in 1860. William worked for James Donaldson at Kangaroo Ground for several years. After 1865 he selected 80 acres at Steels Creek under the Victorian Lands Act (1865) and gradually added to it to gain a holding of 320 acres. He developed a model farm and became a noted horticulturalist and orchardist in the district. He was awarded a bronze medal and a diploma at the Amsterdam Exhibition 1863 for corn. In addition to successes at the Yarra Glen Show he also took 13 first prizes for oats at Heidelberg. William and Elizabeth had twelve children, two of whom died in infancy.
