SCOTT, Joseph (1799-1873)

Joseph was born at Dovenby, Cumberland, England about 1799. He married Jane Whitehead at Cockermouth 15 November 1824. They had eight sons and two daughters and lived at Havercroft, near Lamplugh, a farming community. Joseph and Jane arrived in Geelong on the Zes Gesusters (Six Sisters) in January 1853 with five of their younger children: John, William, Jane, Anthony and Jonathon. Joseph and his sons had employment on a farm in the Wimmera initially and then they moved to Eltham, Kangaroo Ground and Diamond Creek. When land became available for selection Joseph took 80 acres at Steels Creek. He later added about 800 acres in the area now bounded by Skyline and Steels Creek Roads. Descendants of the family still live in the district and Scott Lane is named after them. The original family home on the corner of Gulf and Steels Creek Roads was burnt down in 1927 and its replacement was burnt on Black Saturday 2009.
