BELL, William (1831-1877)

The youngest son of William and Agnes Bell, William arrived in Melbourne with them in 1839. In 1851 his father sent him to Yarra Flats with his brothers-in-law Simon and Thomas Armstrong to manage Gulf Station. They built a homestead and William was living in it in 1854. He married Mary Ann Little in 1860 and in 1871 he bought out the Armstrong brothers share in the property. He and Mary Ann had eight children, six of whom spent their lives at Gulf Station. William's older brother, Thomas Muncaster Bell, established the Yarra Flats Hotel in 1864.
