Born Johanna NINK in 1867. Daughter of Frederick Peter Nink and Catherine Riefenberg.
Johanna married James Tonge, a bootmaker in 1888 in Victoria. They had eight children, several of whom attended the Yarra Glen State School. James died at Yarra Glen on 17 December 1915.
By 1913 Johanna had established a nursing home at Yarra Glen for women giving birth. In 1921 she moved her home and business to Healesville. Both James and Johanna are buried at the Yarra Glen Cemetery.
