Anthony was one of the younger sons of Joseph and Jane Scott of Steels Creek. He was born at Havercroft near Lamplugh in Cumberland, England and travelled to Australia in 1853 with his parents. He selected 80 acres at Steels Creek in company with two of his brothers. The holding was later increased to 800 acres on which he resided and farmed with his brother William. In July 1890 he married William's widow, Mary Jane née Hill and they had three children.
