In the early 1900s James and Mary McKinley (nee Price) were living in the Yarra Glen district with four children including James junior, twin daughters Rebecca and Mary, and a second son Samuel. James senior was employed as a labourer. Mary McKinley died in 1903, the year their fifth child Alfreda was born. Alfreda died aged only 14 months old in 1905 and is buried in the Yarra Glen cemetery. James McKinley junior was killed in action in France in May 1917.
