MUIR, George Benjamin (1893-1948)
Born 22 March 1893. The fourth of eight children of David Muir and Maria Smith of Christmas Hills. George grew up on the family farm Park Nook and attended the Christmas Hills State School.
George enlisted on 8 February 1915 and left Melbourne aboard the Ulysses with the 22nd Battalion, D Company on 10 May. He joined the M.E.F. on Gallipoli in August 1915. He remained there until the withdrawal in December. From 1916 George served in France, on the Somme and at Ypres.
George married Irene May Smith in Derbyshire 16 January 1919 prior to returning to Australia During the next ten years George and May had four daughters, but George never regained good health and eventually developed tuberculosis. George died aged 55 in 1948.
Georges war service is commemorated on the Christmas Hills Honor Roll.
