BARRETT, Walter Lewis (b.1890)
Born in Lilydale in 1890.
Son of Arthur Barrett and Amelia Newcombe. After his mother Amelia died in 1900 Walter and his father moved to Dixons Creek. In 1902 Arthur Barrett married Susan Hargreaves, the seventh child of Josiah and Margaret Hargreaves and they had a daughter, Alma in 1903.
Walter enlisted on 4 September 1914 aged 23. He was a labourer then living at Northcote. Walter was a trooper with the 6th Light Horse Regiment when he embarked on 19 December 1914 for the Middle East. Her was sent to Gallipoli on 15 May 1915 but fell ill a month later. Eventually the illness resulted in him returning to Australia and he was discharged in January 1916. His address at this time was Yarra Glen.
In September 1917 his pension was cancelled as he no longer suffered a disability and he had moved to Sydney. In 1939 he registered for WWII service in Sydney. Walter is commemorated on the Dixons Creek Roll of Honor
