John Irvine was born in Scotland. He married Emma Holding (1858-1906) of Yarra Flats in October 1885. Known as Jack, he leased the Yarra Flats Hotel from 1894 until his death. He was also a member of the Yering Lodge and the Yarra Glen Hunt Club (from 1900 known as the Yarra Glen & Lilydale Hunt Club). Jack and Emma had five children. Their eldest son Thomas Irvine (1887-1952) took over the hotel licence after his fathers death. Irvine Crescent was named after him.
